13th Annual GSRMA Conference a Success!

The 13th Annual Conference of GSRMA was a success. The theme “Breakthrough to excellence…your safety program!”  was the backdrop for networking and mingling as members were made aware of the importance of safety to our risk pool. 

For the second year, the two day format was the best attended conference to date. For the first time, GSRMA invited service partners who were present all day Thursday to offer their valuable products and services to your districts. While our bias is clear, the GSRMA training event delivered on the promise to provide relevant topics to our members in an entertaining manner. With unprecedented attendance, the 143 total attendees represented 51 of GSRMA’s member districts.

Risk Manager Scott Schimke kicked off the day with a discussion of the health of the pool and welcomed fourteen new members:  City of Alturas, Colusa Groundwater Authority, Glenn Groundwater Authority, Grenada Irrigation District, Isla Vista Community Services District, Lake Shastina Community Services District, Petaluma Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency, Reclamation District 1001, Reclamation District 2103, San Antonio Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency, Santa Rosa Plain Groundwater Sustainability Agency, Sutter LAFCO,  Yuba County Rural Fire Joint Powers Authority. Mr. Schimke also shared that GSRMA has grown to 273 members and has assets in excess of 25 million.

One by one, the highly qualified speakers tackled safety in a way to inform and invigorate safety leaders at all levels.

Safety expert and magician John Drebinger took the stage and presented “Would You Watch out for My Safety?” He taught us how to look out for one another in a way that makes people say “thank you” as opposed to “mind your own business.” He interjected slight of hand and card tricks in delightful displays of his varied talents.

In “Data Analytics” Chief Operations Officer Rick Krepelka gave industry perspective on how simple claims data isn’t as he talked about GSRMA’s efforts to streamline data to not only prevent losses but possibly even predict them. Technology is here, folks, and data has resulted.  GSRMA staff is here to help you use it for the greater good of your entity and your risk pool.

Next, we welcomed back John Drebinger to talk about how best to draw a person into thoughtful conversation and make the most of all valuable resources. It was particularly interesting to hear his stories of very different (and difficult!) communication styles he has encountered throughout his career working with international organizations such as NASA, Exxon and 3M.

And last, but most certainly not least, GSRMA’s own Safety Officer Mark Marshall walked us through the steps of “Implementing Your Loss Prevention / Safety Program” using the clever analogy of tools in the tool chest.  GSRMA’s Loss Prevention team are tools available to YOU.  We sincerely hope you are encouraged to give any one of us a call and we will promptly and professionally attend to your inquiry.

Throughout the day, raffle items were awarded and the breaks provided networking opportunities and an array of valuable offerings from service partners Hunt Jeppson & Griffin LLP, EIA, DirectGov Source, LensLock, WeTip, Lexipol, California Professional Safety Supply and the Safety Center.

Day two featured two breakout sessions – one for Managers and one for Board Members.   Jerry Johnson has an immense experience in public agencies that was invaluable as he presented a “Safety and Loss Control Workshop.”   This risk management session was geared for Managers and those with administrative safety responsibility and chock full of sound loss control measures. The second break out session, designed for Board Members, gave attendees an opportunity to hear the first hand experiences of Manager Cindy Summers of the Visalia Public Cemetery District. Her powerful presentation “Detecting Fraud & Embezzlement - Now What Do We Do?” is available upon request if you missed the session on this important topic. Then, Scott Schimke advised how your district’s Crime Bond Coverage is structured to protect your district from such losses.

And lastly, Bob Hunt of Hunt Jeppson & Griffin LLC presented a session on the Interactive Process and fielded questions from those in attendance. A trusted public agency advisor, Bob is a wealth of information and we are grateful for his continued support of GSRMA and its members.

Next year, GSRMA welcomes back Gordon Graham for a presentation on risk management sure to engage and inspire. We hope you will plan on joining us the end of the third week in October—specifically the 18th and 19th of 2018.
